What Is CME?

The Caribbean Music Expo is an annual music industry trade show featuring an exhibition of music products and services, music business seminars and live concerts, as well as an awards presentation and the CME Star Search for emerging talent. CME aims to find synergies and promote collaborations that will sharpen the long-term global competitiveness of music products and services from the Caribbean.

CME is established to facilitate the development of music enterprises in the English, French, Spanish and Dutch speaking territories of the Caribbean and seeks to highlight the music of these territories. The project is designed to provide opportunities for business networking, information exchange, music business education, promotion and product development for regional music producers, performers and individuals and entities providing support services. Through the CME educational and entertainment programming is generated for use by regional and international radio and television entities as well as for Internet broadcast.

The first staging of the CME was November 14 to 17, 1999, the second from November 29 to December 3, 2000, and the third from March 20 to 23. The fourth staging of CME will be on a date to be decided in 2003. The CME showcases have included artists performing in various music genres from countries such as Panama, Puerto Rico, Antigua, Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti, Trinidad, Barbados, Martinique, Guadeloupe, St Maarten, the USA and French Guyana. Exhibitors and participants have included record labels, Internet and technology service providers, music industry associations, government agencies, international funding agencies and financial services companies from countries within the Caribbean, the USA, Europe, Latin America and Asia.

The CME has in the past secured funding and technical assistance support from agencies such as the Jamaica Tourist Board, Jampro, the International Institute for Communication and Development/(IICD), and the European Union funded Jamaica Trade Development Project.
