Shaggy and Jimmy Cliff for CME 2002 Awards – Tom Silverman to deliver keynote

The next staging of the Caribbean Music Expo will be March 20 to 24, 2002 in Ocho Rios, Jamaica.

CME 2002 will have significantly greater international impact says project manager Jacquelin Stevens as this year the convention will be staged in collaboration with the widely acclaimed international songwriters retreat known as Music Bridges Around the World. Music Bridges will bring to Jamaica over 50 top international performers, managers and media executives to collaborate with selected local songwriters and performers.

One of the highlights of the CME will again be the annual CME Awards Dinner. This year two very outstanding Jamaicans will receive awards. Actor, singer and songwriter Jimmy Cliff will be presented with the Bob Marley Lifetime Acheivement Award in recognition of his groundbreaking and pioneering efforts throughout his long and illustrious career.

The man of the moment in world popular music, Shaggy, will be presented with the CME 2002 Award for Excellence in recognition of his outstanding accomplishments in recent years, culminating with his top selling album ‘ Hot Shot ’. The presentations will take place at the dinner scheduled for March 23 in Ocho Rios. The first CME Awards Dinner was held in December 2000 at the Renaissance Jamaica Grande in Ocho Rios where awards were presented to Eddy Grant and Wyclef Jean.

The CME 2002 Awards Dinner will also include the delivery of the convention’s keynote address by the president and founder of Tommy Boy Records and the New York New Music Seminar, Tom Silverman.

Tom Silverman is no stranger to Jamaican and Caribbean music as it is his label that was responsible for projects such as JC Lodge’s Telephone Love and Queen Latifah who collaborated with Tony Rebel some years ago. His New Music Seminar was for many years the leading music industry conference in the United States, growing from 200 persons in its first year to a high of 8,000 participants.

CME 2002 is presented by Caribbean Music Expo Limited in association with the European Union’s Trade Development Project administered by JAMPRO. Other sponsors include, the International Institute for Communication and Development/IICD, the Jamaica Tourist Board, Gee Jam Studio, VP Records, the Jamaica Observer and BWIA.
