CME 2002 Concerts

The CME 2002 series of concerts scheduled for March 20 to 24 in Ocho Rios promises to showcase a wide range of performances and music genres covering Reggae, Soca, Salsa, Merengue, Dancehall and Zouk. Over 30 acts from Jamaica, Cuba, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Trinidad & Tobago Antigua, Anguilla, Martinique, Guadeloupe and the United States will perform this year at the CME.

The concert series will culminate with the staging of the “ Music Bridges/CME 2002 Jam Session ” at Chris Blackwell’s new Island Village complex on Sunday March 24th. This show will be a collaborative effort between CME and the internationally acclaimed songwriters retreat known as Music Bridges Around the World, which will be staged in Jamaica from March 17 to 25.

Several top performers from the United States and Europe will join with their Jamaican counterparts in a jam session of songs created at the retreat. The songwriting retreat will be hosted at the Dragon Bay Resort in Port Antonio. Proceeds of this final CME concert will go to the Edna Manley School of Music.

The Island Village Amphitheatre will be the main concert venue for CME 2002, thanks to the support of Island Outpost, sponsors of the CME since its inception. Three big CME concerts will be presented at Island Village. On Friday March 22 the Village will host the “ Moods in Reggae ” concert, which will feature artistes from the Big Yard/MCA label along with other established and upcoming reggae/dancehall artistes.

CME 2002 awardee Shaggy will be co-host of this concert. Saturday March 23 will see the presentation of “ The Caribbean Fete ” featuring Soca, Salsa, Merengue and Zouk artistes from Trinidad, Cuba, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic. Several other concert performances will take place during the CME from March 20 to 24 at venues such as the Little Pub and the Renaissance Jamaica Grand.

Over the past two years the CME has played host to performers such as, Wyclef Jean, Doug E Fresh, Bushman, Morgan Heritage, Damian ‘ Junior Gong’ Marley, Junior Kelly, 3 Canal, Allison Hinds & Square One, Sean Paul, Bamboleo, Tito Puente Jr. Bayanga, Jimmy Cozier, Yogi, 4D People, Pannazz Steel Orchestra, Son Damas, Chris Combette and many others. Visiting international stars have included Eve, Mary J Blige and Eddy Grant.

Performers for the CME concerts are selected from applications received by the Caribbean Music Expo from artistes and labels from the French, Spanish, Dutch and English speaking countries of the region. A large group of international music and media executives, attorneys and managers will attend CME 2002 to witness the concert showcases. Participants have already been confirmed from entities such as, Sony Music, BMG Music, Tommy Boy Records, RAS Records, Arista Records, VP Records, The Recording Industry Association of America/RIAA, E Television, BET, XM Satellite Radio, BRE Magazine and Billboard Magazine.

CME 2002 is presented by the non-profit organization Caribbean Music Expo in association with the European Union’s Trade Development Project administered by Jampro.
